Fort Lauderdale Beach Surf Report: Live Surf Cam, Conditions & Forecast
Surf Report
Wednesday: Small conditions with light onshore winds
Thursday: We have a little am wind swell bump and than back to the smaller stuff with mostly light onshore winds.
Looking Ahead: We are staying small on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday we have a bout of strong NE winds that pushing up some big chunky surf. Winds stay onshore in the 20 mph range for Sunday for continued big chunky surf. Onshore winds may ease for the beginning of next week into the mid week for a window of workable surf so stay tuned.
Fort Lauderdale Beach is the wide, lively centerpiece of the Broward County coast, fronted by the famous wave-wall promenade and the bustling A1A strip of hotels, bars, and restaurants. The surf is an exposed, sand-bottom beach break, with 14th Street one of the better-known peaks, working lefts and rights on all tides. It is more of a scene and a swim-and-sunbathe beach than a surf destination, but when a solid swell finds its way in it can offer a fun, small wave.
Best Swell Direction: East and northeast swells work best, with winter storm groundswell and hurricane swells delivering the rare bigger days.
Best Winds: West to northwest winds are offshore here and hold the faces clean.
Best Size: Usually small, rarely much overhead, picking up mainly on solid swell events.
Best Tide: Works through all stages of the tide.
Break: Exposed sand-bottom beach break with shifting sandbars, offering both lefts and rights.
Consistency: This is a sheltered, fickle stretch that sits deep in the shadow of the Bahamas, so it is flat much of the time and only breaks on a solid east or northeast swell, a winter front, or a hurricane. Fall tends to be the better window, and summer is usually flat.
Crowds: When it is actually working it can get crowded and competitive, since surfable days are not frequent, so mind the lineup. Otherwise the beach itself is busy year round with the tourist crowd.
Facilities: Fort Lauderdale Beach Park, along A1A, is a wide guarded beach with restrooms, outdoor showers, a playground, picnic tables with grills, and volleyball and basketball courts. The beachfront promenade, shops, and restaurants of the A1A strip are right across the street.
Lifeguards: The beach is guarded, so check the posted flags before paddling out, and mind the heavy A1A traffic when crossing with a board.
Operating Hours (Subject to change): The beach is generally open during daylight hours. Confirm current hours with the City of Fort Lauderdale.
Fees: Parking is paid garages and metered street spaces along A1A, which get busy and pricey on weekends, so plan ahead or arrive early.
