Destin Beach Surf Report: Live Surf Cam, Conditions & Forecast
Surf Report
Wednesday: Small to flat
Thursday Small to flat
Looking ahead: Small to flat for Friday. Strong offshore winds build for Saturday pushing everything away from us. Winds shift more to the East for Sunday kicking up some chunky cross shore wind swell.
Destin is a popular Panhandle Gulf Coast town in Okaloosa County, famous for its sugar-white quartz sand and clear emerald water, with the East Pass jetties separating the harbor from the Gulf at its west end. It is an exposed, sand-bottom Gulf beach break, and the jetty at the East Pass shapes the most notable peaks. By Gulf standards it is a touch better than most, but it is still small and inconsistent, only turning on when a winter cold front or a tropical system churns up the water.
Best Swell Direction: South to southeast wind swell, generated by Gulf cold fronts and tropical or hurricane systems.
Best Winds: North to northwest winds are offshore here, the opposite of the Atlantic coast, since the Gulf lies to the south.
Best Size: Usually small, picking up mainly on winter northeast storms and during hurricane season, when the East Jetty in particular can produce a real wave.
Best Tide: Works through all stages of the tide on the days it breaks.
Break: A sand-bottom Gulf beach break with jetty influence at the East Pass. Local peaks include the more consistent, all-levels spot near the old NCO Club, the East Jetty, which can get big and is better left to intermediate and advanced surfers, and the Pumphouse, a shallower, hard-sand wave for experienced surfers.
Seasons: The best windows are winter cold fronts and the summer and fall hurricane season. Summer is typically flat and calm.
Crowds: Rarely crowded by ocean standards, though the better peaks draw the local crew when it is working. The beach itself is busy with the resort crowd year round.
Jetty and Pass Currents: Around the East Pass and Norriego Point, respect the jetty rocks and the pass, which moves a lot of water on the tides and sets up strong currents. Stay clear of the rocks and know the conditions before you paddle out.
Lifeguards and Flags: Destin uses a colored beach-flag warning system, including double red flags for closed water, so always check the flag before going out, and note that lifeguard coverage is limited.
Facilities: Public accesses include James Lee Park (free parking, pavilions, picnic areas, restrooms, playground, and the Crab Trap restaurant) and Norriego Point, a restored park at the harbor mouth. Henderson Beach State Park nearby offers a developed natural beach with a separate entrance fee.
Operating Hours (Subject to change): The beaches are generally open during daylight hours. Confirm current rules with the City of Destin and Okaloosa County.
Fees: Parking at James Lee Park and the county beach accesses is generally free, while Henderson Beach State Park charges a vehicle entrance fee. Confirm current access and parking details at https://www.destinfwb.com/explore/beaches/public-beach-access/
