[September 17, 2014] I woke up to one of my best friends, Christian, calling me at 4 am. “Christa! Christa! Why are you still sleeping?! The waves are going off because of Hurricane Edouard! Come over and let’s surf!” If you know me, I am very hard to get up in the morning. My parents struggle to get me to school on time every day, but say, “there are waves” and I’m running out the door! His grandma took us to Sebastian Inlet around 6 am and there wasn’t a soul out yet. It almost seemed too good to be true.

Christian always told me about this spot called Chernobyl’s that was kind of like a secret local spot that wasn’t so much a secret, people were just too lazy to walk there. It was peeling perfectly! We paddled out into the misty, dark morning and surfed the sunrise. Let me tell you something, that sun was blinding my eyes so catching waves felt almost impossible. The waves varied from shoulder high to overhead, but then people started to paddle out.

By 10AM we headed to 2nd peak, usually this is my spot but today it was closeout city. I filmed Christian for a few waves ( I promised him I would ) and got some sick shots!

After eating some delicious chicken tenders and mouthwatering sweet potato fries from the Sebastian Inlet Grill, we started to walk down A1A,it was time to charge Spanish house. As we were walking I heard, “Hey Christa! Where are you heading? Want to surf?” It was the surf guru girl/ Buddha’s daughter, Anna! She picked us up and we all paddled out at Spanish house, and what luck! The sand was turning on the inside shore break, and the waves were so gnarly! Of course Christian was charging, but so was Anna. And I was getting my share too! I remember her saying, “You must be pretty brave to charge that wave,” whenever I got a set wave. I love surfing with other girls like Shay and Alexi and Anna because it’s fun to have another girl out there.

The jellyfish were everywhere,  and I had giant red marks and tentacle marks all up and down my body. After an hour or two we couldn’t handle it anymore so we headed back to Christians casa. After consuming multiple PB&J’s we headed back out for yet another surf session. We went to one of my favorite local spots in the hood, SBI. The waves were getting bigger and better! A guy on a fun shape paddled about 10 minutes after us and you won’t believe what happened. We started to talk and he ended being from North Miami, same as my parents and their friends. He knew everyone I did: Keith Cohen (KC), Mike Kaplan, Ronny Keindl, ect. His name was Brett Warren. He had a buddy down on the sand and was taking photos, luckily for Christian and I, he got some sick photos! It was really cool to see someone that knew everyone I know from miles away.

After being lit up by jellyfish again, Christian and I decided to walk back to his house. As die hard surfers we chose to walk back on the beach in case we saw a sick set wave and couldn’t resist to paddle out again. Today Florida produced, and we got to surf Sunnyland Beach for a little while longer. That was probably the best day ever, I had a blast! The next day my whole crew got together after school; Christian, Maury, Hunter, and I surfed South Access Floridana. I can’t wait for another swell to come so I can skip* and get some rad waves with little to no one else out so I can catch all the waves I want…

My parents let me skip because I try really hard in school and I am sustain good grades in school...Stay tuned for more adventures with Me CJ Sporty! and Our Crew!!! Hurricane Edouard Surfing Blog by Christa XX
