Surfet All Girls Surf Team

All Girls Surf Team Provides an Empowering Environment to Competitive Female Surfing

Story/Photos by Julie Brockmeyer Stine, Surfet

For years, Monica Monsalve surfed Central Florida surf breaks as one of the few females in the line-ups. Steadily, she noticed the amount of female surfers growing more abundant in the water and the interest to learn, just as promising in numbers.

When Monica made the decision to open a distinctive surf school in Cocoa Beach, Florida, the idea of providing a more relevant and comfortable environment for females, helped launched the Surfet Surf School and brand.

Not just an ordinary surf school for females, Surfet also provides surf trips and yoga/surf retreats, amateur and pro events, a surf club for women, and sponsorship for amateur females interested in the competitive side of surfing. “ I love sharing my stoke for surfing to women and girls of all ages, ethnicities, shapes and sizes. This sport does not discriminate; everybody should feel the excitement of riding a wave,” said Monsalve.

Open to amateur females of all ages, The Surfet Surf Team allows females the opportunity to strengthen their skills by receiving free professional coaching as well as monetary incentives without having to compete on a more professional level. As a competitive surfer for ESA herself, Monica knows how important it is to cultivate raw talent and promote healthy and ethical attitudes among competitive young females. “We’re all out here to have fun, but in order to grow the sport of women’s surfing, it’s important we endorse female surfers with great attitudes and who want to help advance the sport to the next level through competition,” Monsalve stated.

Coaching and leading the Surfet Surf Team is Lauren McLean, a 23 year-old math major from Cocoa Beach who also surfs competitively for the University of Central Florida. McLean is currently ranked number two in the nation for the National Scholastic Surfing Association and will begin competing on the 2008 World Qualifying Series tour. “I’m really proud of the team we’ve put together and I’m excited about the prospect of where some of these team members are headed in the future,” commented Lauren.

With one location in Cocoa Beach, Florida, the Surfet Surf Team competes primarily in the Central Florida ESA District. Other contests the team participates in include: The National Kidney Foundation Surfing Contest, Sisters of the Sea, East Coast Wahine Surfing Championship, and competitions hosted by Surfet which include: Saltwater Sweetheart, Hurricane Honeys and the Halloween Wahine Pro/Am Surf Contest. Most of the events hosted by Surfet offers a percentage of the proceeds to non-profit organizations like Boarding For Breast Cancer and The World Skin Cancer Foundation.

In order to help raise money for the team’s membership and other contest fees, the team organizes fundraisers such as car washes and yard sales. “We all work hard to keep the team cohesive in so many ways and I think this is just the beginning to a great ride ahead.” said Monsalve.
